The brand-new 2022 MacBook Air with the M2 CPU is in our
possession. Here are my initial thoughts.
In comparison to the MacBook Pro, the MacBook Air's revamp
feels more significant. The borders of the Pro changed from being somewhat
covered to being slightly squared. Not a dramatic change.
The device changed from being a tapered wedge to a
scaled-down MacBook Pro with the introduction of the MacBook Air. We enjoy
using it. We really enjoy it. It seems more comfortable to carry, and it's
amazing to see how tiny the entire machine is.
In comparison to the previous model, the new MacBook Air is
both thicker and thinner. The previous generation machine had the thickest point
of 1.61 cm and the thinnest point of.41 cm. The upgraded variant has a machine
width of 1.31 cm.
The fact that the back of the machine is thinner than the
front, despite the fact that half of it is thicker than it was before, creates
the appearance that the whole thing is smaller. Apple also reduced its weight
by.1 pound. We'll take any savings we can get, even if it isn't significantly
lighter in usage and we can hardly feel the difference side by side.
Little touches
It seems sensible that Apple would equip its high-end MacBook
Pro with all the extra bells and whistles. However, these things seem to favor
mass-market versions more frequently.
Apple bundled color-coordinated stickers with the 24-inch
iMac to correspond with the cheerful hue of the desktop computer. The MacBook
Air was created by Apple in the same way. Our Midnight edition contains
stickers that are Midnight in color, while our Starlight version has stickers
that are Starlight in color.
Apple even uses a power cord that matches. For its portable
devices, Apple has traditionally used white cords, but not this time. In
particular, the Midnight MagSafe 3 cable has a wonderful appearance.
On the new Air, the function keys are also twice as big as
they were previously. Prior to this, we frequently found ourselves overshooting
the buttons with the smaller keys. Now that they are bigger, we always land
dead-center while attempting to use Touch ID or change the volume.
First impressions
The M2 MacBook Air doesn't seem to be much slower or quicker
than the previous-generation MacBook Air or the M2 13-inch MacBook Pro, at
least not yet. In your regular everyday duties, it looks to be on the level with
the other devices. Naturally, this is before doing any thorough benchmarks.
There will undoubtedly be a need for more testing. The new 1080P FaceTime camera's image quality is noticeably superior to that of the previous version, though. The 720P camera wasn't great, and a continuity camera will still yield better results.
In the next few days, we'll keep evaluating the new M2 MacBook
Air against Apple's other portables. Watch AppleInsider for updates.
