The iPhone
14 Pro could bring five major updates.
At the time of writing, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro
Max are still a few months away, with a September release date seeming likely,
and the wait is feeling lengthy because leaks and speculations imply there's a
lot to look forward to.
This year appears to be an unusual one for the iPhone, with
the Pro models receiving even more updates than normal, while the ordinary
iPhone 14 may only be a minor boost over the iPhone 13.
So we're looking at the Pro models, and we've outlined the best upgrades we've heard about so far. None of these details have been confirmed as of yet, but they all appear to be very likely.
No more notch
The notch is apparently being removed from the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, which is perhaps the most significant alteration.
This is something we've wanted for years, essentially since the iPhone X came with the notch, and it appears that this will be the year it's gone, according to multiple sources.
Apple's
option may not be to everyone's liking, since the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max are
expected to have two cut-outs on the screen instead. One with a little punch hole and one with a larger punch hole.
This is a
flawed solution that will cause the screen to be more disrupted than on most
Android phones, but Apple will most likely need to house all of the Face ID
components.
A 48-megapixel camera
Apple doesn't improve its phones' cameras every year, at
least not in a substantial sense, but we might be in for a dramatic shift this
year, with reports pointing to a 48MP primary sensor replacing the 12MP sensor
used in the iPhone 13 range.
This might represent a significant improvement to Apple's already amazing photographic capabilities, as well as the ability to shoot 8K video, up from 4K on current models.
It's unclear how big of a difference this lens shift – if it occurs – will actually make, but we expect it to be significant.
More strength
The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will almost probably
be more powerful than the iPhone 13 Pro series, due to a new A16 Bionic
processor, which is perhaps the most obvious and expected change.
There's a chance these phones may get a RAM bump from 6GB to 8GB, albeit just one source has stated it, and the majority of sources disagree.
While a new processor isn't the most thrilling or unexpected change, it is one that you may need to buy a Pro model to obtain this year.
An always-on display
Many Android phones have always-on screens, which can show the clock and notification symbols even when the screen is turned off. This feature might be coming to the iPhone 14 Pro range as well.
According to a reliable source, the capability might be activated as part of iOS 16, but only for phones with a 1Hz refresh rate. This battery-saving function isn't available on any current iPhone, but it appears to be coming to the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, letting them have an always-on display.
A more powerful battery
We're always looking for bigger batteries in phones – or at
the at least, improved battery life - and it appears that the iPhone 14 Pro
range may deliver, as one source suggests that the batteries will be larger
this year.
We don't know how much bigger it will be, but the iPhone 13 Pro Max currently has outstanding battery life, so if it gets much better, endurance might be a huge highlight this year.
