Think about one thing before reading our Apple Watch SE review: what do you genuinely want from a smartwatch?

Since the Apple Watch SE is a high-value wristwatch with all the finest watchOS features at a low price, it is an underestimated hit in the making if it is simply "an Apple Watch." Heck, for certain people, it could even be the top smartwatch available.

Along with the Apple Watch 6, it's also a "bigger" Apple Watch, with a wider display and sizes of 40mm and 44mm, as opposed to the Apple Watch 3, which is still available for purchase and has a smaller screen but is 38mm and 42mm in size. The latter is the true rival to the Apple Watch SE, and we'll have to wait and see whether the future Apple Watch 7 introduces any more enticing features.

In terms of clarity and resolution, the display is also recognizable. This is Apple at its finest because OLED technology makes it crisp, bright, and simple to read in any environment.

To keep the price down, Apple has removed the always-on display, so much as with prior Watches, you'll need to raise your wrist to check the time, how your workout is going, follow a map you're using, or pretty much anything else.

Even while it helps to save money and battery, that is not the best option for a watch.

The Apple Watch stands out among other smartwatches because it's arguably the best at extending a phone onto the wrist. Alarms sync perfectly across devices. Instant data sharing occurs between apps. The ecosystem of Apple has been extremely well integrated.

Although many of the Watch SE's functions are scaled-down copies of those found on the iPhone, the Apple Watch excels when it comes to fitness. The number of activities that can be monitored in the built-in Workout app is always expanding, and third-party programs like Strava also function well on the Watch, albeit more spartanly.

These seamless experiences are what will attract Apple Watch users. While this can be done on any of the Apple Watch models, the Watch SE's larger screen for tracking your workout and the lower price point than the Watch-6 make it a compelling fitness companion. Add in an Apple Music subscription and a pair of AirPods, and you can head out of the house without your phone and go running with a wealth of music.

Apple still has some ground to make up in terms of battery life, though. In 2020, having a wristwatch that lasts barely a day and a half is unacceptable, especially when Apple included sleep monitoring in the Watch SE.

When should you charge this device? You wind yourself performing spotty top-ups here and there or forgetting to pick up the Watch again and leaving it off your wrist for hours at a time since charging throughout the day is not a natural option as charging overnight is.

Although the battery life of the Apple Watch series is impressive compared to the rest of the market (and owing to the absence of an always-on display and an efficient processor at the core, the best we've seen from Apple), it is sadly insufficient.

You would have to choose whether to alter your charging habits in order to make use of the functionality or just not use it very much if sleep monitoring weren't so straightforward. However, sleep monitoring just tells you when you've been sleeping; there are several more affordable and longer-lasting smartwatches on the market that can provide you with far more information.

The Watch SE forgoes "luxury" features and just provides the functionality you require if you want a cutting-edge Apple Watch but don't want to spend a lot of money. In terms of power and functionality, it falls halfway between the Apple Watch 4 and Apple Watch 5, and if you can find the earlier Watch 4.

Design for Apple Watch SE

Nobody will be surprised by the Apple Watch SE's look because it is identical to every previous Apple Watch model released since the Apple Watch 4 in 2018.

The Digital Crown, which rolls comfortably under the finger when you use it to navigate through a list on the Watch face, is housed in the same curved shape that gracefully folds into the OLED display (more on that in a bit).

You may utilize the power/multitasking button, located below that, to switch between recently-opened applications and return to the one you previously used.

Despite being a less expensive Apple Watch, there is no indication that the design process was compromised.

The heart rate monitor, which has the bright green LEDs that check your pulse throughout the day and protrude slightly outward but aren't felt on the wrist in typical use, is located on the underside of the Watch SE.

The Solo Loop, a brand-new kind of band, will debut in 2020 and looks like a pretty cool addition. You don't have to repeatedly clasp and unbuckle your Watch SE to put it on and take it off since it has a silicone (or braided silicon) loop that spans over your hand.

You must, however, be careful to choose the appropriate size for your wrist, since Apple foolishly supplied us the largest and third-largest sizes, turning our Apple Watch SE into a bangle.

In the past, getting fitted for one at an Apple Store would be the norm, but in today's Covid environment, people are probably less inclined to do that; the alternative is to print out a paper sizing chart, and that simply sounds like a lot of stress.

Although they are expensive and sometimes difficult to put on and take off, there are many alternative brands available, so you can always find one that suits you. We hope Apple would create a design that makes it possible to switch bands easily.

Contrary to the Apple Watch 6, the Apple Watch SE does not come in any flashy new color options; instead, Cook's Crew has decided to stick with the red hue of the flagship Watch to persuade customers to pay a little more money if they want the (in our opinion) most attractive option on their wrist. If you want the Watch SE, your only options are gold, silver, or space gray.

Your primary motivation for purchasing the Apple Watch SE is probably its fitness features. Since the first Watch was released in 2015, Apple has been working diligently to transform its wearables into effective health and wellness tools, and with each version, it gets better at it.

You know you're getting a powerful health and fitness gadget for less money than the 2019 model cost since the Watch SE is mostly equivalent to the Apple Watch 5, with the exception of not having an always-on display.

The Watch SE's main features include GPS and Glonass (another satellite it can follow to aid with position accuracy), as well as 5 ATM water resistance, which allows you to use it in shallow waters.

The Workouts app now includes Dance and Cooldown in addition to running, walking, cycling, yoga, and more, giving you new options to measure your health with the release of watchOS 7. With these additional options, your calorie burn will be more precise and you'll be able to see when you've reached your fitness rings.

The Apple Watch SE's ability to assist you in leading a fitter, healthier lifestyle depends on those rings. If you're not aware with the idea already, these colored, animated rings fill up based on how much exercise you get each day, how much movement you can manage, and how frequently you get up from your desk.

Do you need to get an Apple Watch SE?

Buy it if…

You want an Apple Watch for less money.

Despite the Watch SE's cheaper price, it still offers many of the premium features found in the Watch 6. It all depends on how much of an always-on display you require.

Blood oxygen is not important to you.

One of the important features of the Watch 6 is the ability to monitor how well your respiratory system is functioning, but many people will be able to live without it because it's more of a feature for peace of mind than a need.

Don't purchase it If...

You want the latest and finest

The Watch SE is technically 1.5 generations old because it is a combination of the Watch 4 and Watch 5. If you appreciate having every cutting-edge feature, this isn’t for you.

You want the cheapest Apple Watch

The Apple Watch 3 is that, and it's still available. Although many of the most helpful Watch Features are available, it also lacks the always-on display and has a smaller display.
